Play Always Serves a Purpose

A client asked Back of the Napkin to help foster connection and cohesion between their staff - so we brought our Legos.

In addition to being the scourge of every parent’s feet, Legos hold incredible potential to bring diverse teams closer and innovative ideas to the forefront.

What is Lego® Serious Play®?

Lego® Serious Play® (LSP) is an engagement technique that uses Lego bricks to help individuals and teams explore complex issues, develop creative solutions, and make better decisions. It has been proven to be effective in a variety of settings, including corporate team building, leadership development, and strategic planning.

Using Legos allows participants to approach problems from a different perspective and think creatively about solutions. This can be particularly valuable for organizations looking to generate new ideas or break out of old patterns of thinking.

How does LSP work?

Typical meeting environments favor specific learning, processing, and communication styles by using 2-D materials (PowerPoint, Excell charts etc.) for cognitive and analytical discussion. Lego® Serious Play® workshops use 3-D materials to facilitate multi-sensory and multi-dimensional experiences that generates cognitive, social, emotional, imaginative, and emergent discussion.

  1. Build individual models in response to a prompt

  2. Discuss the meaning of models as a group

  3. Build shared group models from individual builds

  4. Make associations and connections between elements of the model to play out scenarios using the model

Workshop participant explains the meaning behind their build.

Why does LSP work?

  • Develops the capacity to understand the meaning in context, recognize social constructs, and act/build in accordance with them.

  • Participants are free to take risks, imagine the unthinkable and be creative in approaches to complex, changing, or unpredictable challenges.

  • Generate new perspectives on familiar ideas

  • Develops collective understanding of the organization leading to improved ability to proactively craft future strategies and respond in a crisis.

Who should you use Lego® Serious Play®?

LSP workshops can be customized to meet the specific needs and goals of a corporate client. This means that it can be tailored to address specific business challenges or objectives, making it a highly relevant and valuable experience for organizations and teams at any stage of development.
